چکیده

This paper presents methods to reduce memory latency in the main memory subsystem below the board-level cache. We consider conventional page-mode DRAMs and cached DRAMs. Evaluation is performed via trace-driven simulation of a suite of nine benchmarks. In the case of page-mode DRAMs we show that it can be detrimental to use page-mode naively. We propose two enhancements that reduce overall memory latency in this case: one is the remapping of address bits and the other is selective usage of page-mode under the control of the memory controller. In the case of cached DRAM we quantify the improvements that can be attained by introducing some SRAM cache on the DRAM chip. We evaluate various design alternatives for the line size and associativity of the SRAM cache.

Ip Caching for Terabit Speed Routers

As network speeds continue to grow, current methods of translating destination IP addresses to output port numbers during routing become inadequately slow. Eventhough this lookup is often performed in hardware, it may still be limited by DRAM access latencies. We present a method of speeding up access to DRAM based lookup mechanisms by more than a factor of 10 using CPU style memory caches. Rea...

Tiered-Latency DRAM (TL-DRAM)

This paper summarizes the idea of Tiered-Latency DRAM, which was published in HPCA 2013 [37]. The key goal of TL-DRAM is to provide low DRAM latency at low cost, a critical problem in modern memory systems [55]. To this end, TL-DRAM introduces heterogeneity into the design of a DRAM subarray by segmenting the bitlines, thereby creating a low-latency, low-energy, low-capacity portion in the suba...

MigrantStore: Leveraging Virtual Memory in DRAM-PCM Memory Architecture

With the imminent slowing down of DRAM scaling, Phase Change Memory (PCM) is emerging as a lead alternative for main memory technology. While PCM achieves low energy due to various technology-specific advantages, PCM is significantly slower than DRAM (especially for writes) and can endure far fewer writes before wearing out. Previous work has proposed to use a large, DRAM-based hardware cache t...

DynRBLA: A High-Performance and Energy-Efficient Row Buffer Locality-Aware Caching Policy for Hybrid Memories

Phase change memory (PCM) is a promising memory technology that can offer higher memory capacity than DRAM. Unfortunately, PCM’s access latencies and energies are higher than DRAM and its endurance is lower. DRAM-PCM hybrid memory systems use DRAM as a cache to PCM, to achieve the low access latencies and energies, and high endurance of DRAM, while taking advantage of the large PCM capacity. A ...

Mlcached: Multi-level DRAM-NAND Key-value Cache

We present Mlcached, multi-level DRAM-NAND keyvalue cache, that is designed to enable independent resource provisioning of DRAM and NAND flash memory by completely decoupling each caching layers. Mlcached utilizes DRAM for L1 cache and our new KVcache device for L2 cache. The index-integrated FTL is implemented in the KV-cache device to eliminate any inmemory indexes that prohibit the independe...

Flash-Conscious Cache Population for Enterprise Database Workloads

Host-side flash caching has lately emerged as a suitable and e↵ective means of accelerating enterprise workloads. However, cache management for flash-based caching is di↵erent from traditional DRAM-based caching. A flash cache sits underneath the DRAM cache. Its position in the hierarchy combined with the unique characteristics of flash, calls for a di↵erent cache management solution. Specifica...
